This 2 hour course is designed to meet the requirements of the responsibilities and requirements of prescribing Schedule II opioid drugs in the State of California. In order to help guide better decision making for the Dental practitioners, the course will review the history and evolution of Opioids as a treatment in pain management, the pharmacology of opioids, the regulatory requirements for providers and dispensers, best practices for pain management in the Dental Office, management strategies for the vulnerable or substance use disorder patient, and the overall social impact of opioid addiction. There are new tools emerging with non-opioid medications that can work directly to reduce habit forming prescriptions. There are also adjunct medications and affiliated health professionals that can reduce the need for opioids by altering operative and post operative outcomes. The overall goal is to provide additional tools outside of opioids for the practitioner to create more informed decisions, with custom pain management plans that fit the patient and help reduce the impact of the opioid epidemic on our population.

  • Understand opioid sparing principles
  • Learn of adjunct medications that assist in pain management
  • Understand the ideal modes of pain management in Dentistry
  • Learn of patient experiences with this form of pain management
  • Examine potential of opioid dependence vs addictionHow to prepare a pre, intra, and post operative pain management plan

  • Practices for Pain Management in Dentistry
  • Regulatory Requirements for Prescribers and Dispensers
  • Dental Office Procedures for Managing Vulnerable or Substance Use Disorder Patients
  • Recognize at risk populations for opioid addiction
  • Provide knowledge of alternatives to opioids
  • Understand how to use and navigate the CARES system
  • Understand how opioids cause addiction
  • Understand how opioids work on pain
  • Understand regulatory requirements
  • Be able to use new anesthetics for long term pain control
  • Be able to prescribe alternative medications to opioids

 

 


 

Bio:

Dr. Frydman is a Professor of Clinical Dentistry in the Division of Periodontology at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC and serves as the Director of Continuing Education at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC. Dr. Frydman received his dental degree from UCLA and graduated from the Advanced Periodontology Program at USC, where he has since been a faculty member. Dr. Frydman has served on the Education Committee for the AAP, serves as a Board Examiner for American Board of Periodontology and has served on multiple Task Forces for ABP and AAP. Dr. Frydman is involved locally with peer review, has served as a reviewer for the State Board, and is an onsite examiner for Moderate Sedation Permits. Dr. Frydman teaches courses in periodontology, implant therapy, and clinical moderate sedation for the Advanced Periodontology residents. Dr. Frydman lectures nationally and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.
