Oral and Dental Care of Cancer Survivors 2026

Cancer survivors require ongoing oral and dental care. There have been significant advances in cancer care, increasing survivors and increasing need for continuing care. Active cancer treatment may cause acute oral complications.  Increasing numbers of patients are on chronic treatment protocols that may impact dental care. Some unique oral complications may occur. Oral status and function has significant impact upon quality of life and survivorship. 
The purpose of this presentation is to introduce some current data & concepts in oncology care and to discuss the oral care of cancer survivors.

The primary objectives are:

  • To provide introduction to principles of oncology care, and in head and neck oncology
  • To understand common oral/oropharyngeal complications of cancer survivors
  • To recognize approaches for prevention & management of dental & oropharyngeal needs of HNC survivors
  • To recognize the importance of integrated oral/dental care in the cancer continuum
  • To provide ongoing oral care and when to seek support for patient care

Bio

Joel B. Epstein, DMD, MSD, FRCD(C), FDS RCS(Ed), Diplomate, American Board of Oral Medicine

Dr. Epstein completed Oral Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. He is currently Professor and Medical Director Oral Oncology at City of Hope National Cancer Center and Cedars-Sinai Health System in Los Angeles. He conducts a private referral practice in Oral Medicine and Oral Oncology in Beverly Hills. He is active in clinical care, clinical research and is highly published with more than 900 publications.
