About the Program

Over 30 million Americans have diabetes. Diabetes has a bi-directional relationship with inflammatory oral diseases. How do we treat diabetes patients differently in the dental office, or do we? This course has a clinical focus and is designed to make us more comfortable treating patients with diabetes. The course emphasizes current medical therapies for diabetes, dental treatment pathways for these patients, and prevention and management of diabetic emergencies in the dental office.

Learning Objectives: Following this course, the attendee will…

  • Understand how diabetes and oral health interrelate.
  • Comprehend modern medical management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Appreciate the potential impact of diabetes on dental care.
  • Know different strategies for managing dental patients with diabetes.


About the Speaker  

Brian Mealey, D.D.S., M.S., is a Clinical Professor and former Graduate Program Director in the Department of Periodontics at the UT Health School of Dentistry in San Antonio, Texas. He served 21 years in the U.S Air Force as both a general dentist and a periodontist. He was the Chair of the Department of Periodontics at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio and the Program Director of the Air Force Periodontics Residency.  Dr. Mealey is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, and a former Director of the Board as well as a former Trustee of the AAP. He is co-editor and author of two textbooks in periodontics and has published over 100 articles and abstracts in the scientific literature with a focus on both periodontal medicine and implant dentistry. Dr. Mealey maintains an active clinical practice in periodontics and implantology.
